Another year, another awesome Spooky Empire convention. Yeah that's right, try as it may, hurricane Matthew did nothing to eliminate the spirit of horror and it's celebration of it under a renewed (re-branded) community driven Spooky Empire off-shoot. Now hosted by the always awesome Gods and Monsters specialty shop, under a partnership with the locally run Coffee Shop of Horrors - the affectionately named Spooky Empire Refugees was THE place to be for horror fans this past weekend. Offering everyone who attended more than enough entertainment and not to mention, opportunities to meet a few celebrities and industry talents, that the sting of not having the official planned event was mostly dulled.
Not everyone made it out of the weekend unscathed, and it's important to understand that Spooky Empire, much like the event at Gods and Monsters, isn't a corporate run convention. It doesn't have the backing of a million dollar advertising machines and investors. No, it's a convention that's put together, pushed, and fueled by the same community that made this weekend's substitute possible, and at the helm of it all, two wonderful people - Petey and Gina Mongelli. With what was set to be the largest showing of Spooky yet (taking place at the Orange County Convention Center) a LOT of their time and money was invested into this, and as a result of our beloved convention's cancellation, lost as well. Now, this doesn't have to spell the end of Spooky Empire, but it could absolutely harm it's chances of a large venue in the future - so while steps were taken to give fans an alternative for celebrating horror, let's work together once more, and help to soften the blow for the two folks that inspired it.
You can donate towards the future of Spooky Empire at the officially created GoFundMe page here - https://www.gofundme.com/savespookyempire and reminisce over the awesome time had as a result of our ability as a community to come together in the name of horror.
