One of my absolute fondest memories as a young ghoul was getting my allowance leading into the weekend, racing off to the comic book store, and snagging a new issue of "Tales from the Crypt", or "Vault of Horror". I'd rush home as fast as possible, lock myself in my room and read the issue cover to back multiple times, absorbing and memorizing every page. From Johnny Craig's classically grotesque art style and imaginatively descriptive writing to the adult themed content and typically violent (and ironic) conclusions, these E.C. horror comic masterpieces not only captivated me, but also shaped my taste in horror - in any medium - through and through. Of course, the fun only lasted for as long as my mom was kept in the dark as to the ever growing collection of nightmare-fuel-on-print stashed cleverly under my lowest dresser drawer (note: never underestimate a mother's detective abilities).
So you can imagine how elated I was when I came across a tweet that lead me to a kickstarter of a comic anthology called, "Burial Plots". Shades of "Tales from the Crypt" with regards to the dark humor permeating each story, this collection of gruesome tales will look to continue the trend E.C. set so long ago. Two stories spanning 30 B&W pages to be specific, "Bum Wrap" and "Shapeshifters", sport plot lines that all but guarantee a fun tongue-in-cheek blood-soaked read. Considering the talent on-board the project, Chris LaMartina and Jimmy George as writers, John de Campos illustrating, with lettering by Nolen Strals - there's no doubt "Burial Plots" will be a faithful and respectful homage to the source comics that inspired its creation, and hopefully, provide young fans of horror with the same fond memories I'm now able to gleefully look back upon.
